The University of North Alabama opened its 2026 football season with a statement win, defeating Samford 22-10 at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville.
Lions shut down Samford’s rushing attack
According to online reports, UNA’s defense held Samford to minus-8 rushing yards, setting a new program record for the fewest rushing yards allowed since the Lions moved to Division I.
The defensive front controlled the line throughout the game. UNA players credited their success to everyone staying disciplined and handling their assignments.
Head coach Brent Dearmon also saw the performance as proof that the team’s larger defensive front had made progress during the offseason.
The Lions kept the pressure on after halftime. Their defense continued to disrupt Samford while the offense controlled the clock with sustained drives.
UNA offense delivers a record-breaking play
The Lions also made history on offense.
Quarterback Destin Wade connected with Xavier Johnson on a 95-yard touchdown pass, setting a new school record for the longest passing touchdown.
Johnson found open space and turned the big play into six points. Wade trusted his receiver to make the play, and Johnson delivered.
The touchdown helped shift the momentum and gave UNA another major highlight in its season opener.
Lions end long season-opening drought
The victory marked UNA’s first season-opening win since 2019.
The Lions now begin the season 1-0 after a strong all-around performance in front of the Huntsville crowd.
UNA still has areas to improve on offense, but Dearmon praised the team’s response and chemistry after the win. He also highlighted Wade’s leadership and his confidence in the defense.
For the Lions, the season could not have started much better. A record-setting defense, a historic touchdown and a home victory gave UNA plenty of momentum heading into the rest of the schedule.
