Wet Winter

Preparing for a wetter Alabama winter? Here are simple home checks to make now

As Alabama heads toward winter, handyman company Buffalo Duck is encouraging homeowners to inspect their doors, windows and walls ahead of potentially wetter conditions.

The company, which serves Montgomery, Birmingham and Huntsville, shared a list of simple home maintenance checks following the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s winter outlook for December 2026 through February 2027. The outlook favors wetter-than-average conditions across the southern United States, although the forecast does not guarantee increased rainfall across every part of Alabama.

Alabama winter outlook points to wetter conditions

NOAA released its winter outlook on Oct. 15, citing a strong El Niño that could shift the jet stream and increase the likelihood of stormier weather across the South.

The Alabama state climatologist’s office at the University of Alabama in Huntsville notes that El Niño’s effects are generally strongest in southern Alabama and weaker farther north. It also cautions that El Niño is not a weather forecast and does not guarantee a wetter winter.

With changing weather conditions in mind, Buffalo Duck recommends that homeowners take a walk around their properties and look for signs of potential water intrusion and air leaks.

Check doors, windows and walls before winter

Buffalo Duck suggests checking exterior caulk around doors and windows for cracks or peeling. Homeowners can also look for doors and windows that rattle in their frames, which may indicate air leaks.

The U.S. Department of Energy explains that caulk is typically used to seal gaps between stationary components, such as window frames, while weatherstripping seals moving parts, including doors and operable windows.

Inside the home, homeowners should inspect ceilings and the tops of walls for new water stains, particularly after rainfall. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends addressing water problems promptly and drying water-damaged areas within 24 to 48 hours to help prevent mold growth.

The EPA also advises against painting or caulking over moldy surfaces. Homes built before 1978 require additional care because lead-based paint may be present around windows, sills, doors and frames. Homeowners should not attempt to remove suspected lead-based paint themselves.

When to call a home repair professional

Recurring water stains, soft or crumbling wood and visible mold may indicate underlying problems that require professional attention.

Buffalo Duck encourages homeowners to have these issues evaluated by a qualified professional rather than covering up the visible damage.

The company provides handyman and home repair services in Montgomery, Birmingham, Huntsville and surrounding Alabama communities. Its services include small home repairs, door and window repairs, drywall work, painting and carpentry.
