Big Spring Park East is becoming easier to picture as construction continues at the former City Hall site in downtown Huntsville.
New features are starting to appear
According to online reports, crews have moved beyond early site work and started building some of the park’s vertical features.
The pavilion is now taking shape, with structural steel giving visitors a better view of the future centerpiece.
Workers are also installing an underground electrical vault and making progress along Church Street. A raised crosswalk now connects the two sides of the park.
Later this fall, crews plan to add landscaping to the new median along Church Street.
More space for play, events and relaxation
The expanded park will add 2.4 acres between Church Street and Fountain Circle.
Plans call for three levels of plazas, a public restroom and a new playground inspired by natural elements. The pavilion will also feature a vegetative roof.
Public art and a water feature will add more character to the expanded space. Landscaping plans include shade trees, rain gardens, irrigation and improved lighting.
The new design will also create additional connections between the park and downtown.
Improved access through downtown
The project includes two accessible routes between Church Street and Fountain Circle.
One route follows a paved switchback path along the park’s south side. Another will create a meandering sidewalk between Church Street and the plaza levels.
These paths will make it easier for people with mobility challenges to move through the area without taking a longer route around the block.
Construction will continue as crews add the pavilion’s timber frame, develop the plaza levels and complete work along Church Street.
The project is currently projected for completion in spring 2027.
