Huntsville is moving forward with plans to expand parking near the Orion Amphitheater, according to online reports.
New Parking Deck Planned for Orion Amphitheater
The Huntsville Planning Commission approved key details for a new four-story parking deck in the MidCity area. The structure will sit south of Sanderson Street and east of Research Park Boulevard.
In addition, the project will add about 924 parking spaces and 30 bike rack spots. The deck will cover roughly 85,000 square feet and help meet growing demand during major events at the venue.
City leaders say the expansion will improve access for concertgoers and reduce congestion in surrounding lots.
Design Features and Transportation Improvements
The parking deck will include three elevators and three stairwells. Designers also plan to use glass-backed stair and elevator areas to improve visibility and enhance public safety.
Furthermore, the structure will support electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Bike racks will also be included for visitors who arrive by bicycle rather than rental services.
Landscape architects will design greenery and visual screening around the building to help it blend into the surrounding area.
Part of Broader Growth in MidCity and Huntsville
Currently, the Orion Amphitheater relies on a mix of on-site and satellite parking areas that total about 3,400 spaces during peak demand. The new deck will help support that system as attendance continues to grow.
In addition, the Planning Commission approved other nearby development projects, including residential subdivisions and a renovation at Drake State Community College.
City officials say these projects reflect ongoing growth in housing, education, and entertainment infrastructure across Huntsville.
