New illuminated public art installation lights up John Hunt Park

A new illuminated sculpture now welcomes visitors to John Hunt Park in Huntsville, according to online reports.

SkyLume Officially Debuts at John Hunt Park

The City of Huntsville and Arts Huntsville officially unveiled “SkyLume” on May 13 during a Huntsville City Football Club match at Joe Davis Stadium.

The 60-foot sculpture now stands at the roundabout entrance near the stadium and festival grounds. City leaders say the installation creates a new visual landmark for one of Huntsville’s busiest recreation and event areas.

Designed by artist Adam Buente of Project One Studio, the sculpture combines painted steel, aluminum, kinetic features, and programmable lighting.

Sculpture Reflects Movement and Community

During the day, wind-responsive elements create motion and shifting reflections across the structure. At night, integrated lighting transforms the sculpture with changing colors and animated patterns visible throughout the park.

Buente said the artwork represents themes of community connection, movement, and forward momentum. He also noted that the design subtly reflects Huntsville’s aerospace identity through its scale and illuminated appearance.

Mayor Tommy Battle said John Hunt Park continues to serve as a major gathering place for sports, events, and family activities across the city.

Huntsville Continues Investing in Public Spaces

Officials said SkyLume marks the largest public art commission managed by Arts Huntsville for the city so far. The project highlights Huntsville’s ongoing investment in public spaces, recreation facilities, and quality-of-life improvements.

The Huntsville Public Art Committee selected the design through a competitive process involving nearly 100 international artist candidates. After reviewing finalist proposals, the committee chose Buente and Project One Studio for the project in late 2024.

James Gossett, Huntsville’s director of parks and recreation, said the sculpture’s shape resembles an Olympic torch, making it a strong fit for John Hunt Park’s growing reputation as a regional sports destination.

Visitors can now experience SkyLume year-round at John Hunt Park near Joe Davis Stadium.
