Huntsville Utilities explains new billing cycle changes after system update

Huntsville Utilities customers have noticed unusual billing cycles this month following the launch of the company’s new software system. The utility company and the City of Madison addressed concerns about potential double-billing in August.

Shortened Billing Cycles

Some customers received bills for a shorter period in August due to the transition to the new system, according to online reports. Huntsville Utilities emphasized that this is a one-time occurrence. The company assured customers that no late fees will be applied and no disconnections will occur for at least the next 6–8 weeks.

The shorter cycle happened because meters had to be read one last time under the old system before switching to the new one. “We understand this is confusing and inconvenient,” the company said, “so we’ve suspended late fees and disconnections during this transition.”

Fees and Credits

Customers affected by the short billing cycle will receive pro-rated credits for availability fees based on usage. However, garbage collection fees are managed by the City of Madison, Huntsville, or Madison County, not Huntsville Utilities. Any adjustments to those fees are decided by the applicable entity.

Madison County clarified on social media that its trash fees have not changed. Some customers saw extra fees in August due to the new billing system, but the county confirmed it will not collect fees beyond the established rates.

New HSVUTIL App

Huntsville Utilities launched its new app, HSVUTIL, on August 11. The app offers:

Billing & Payments: Access bills anytime and pay online to avoid late fees.

Alerts & Notifications: Receive email or text updates about account activity.

Paperless Billing: Save time and trees by going digital with SmartHub.

Usage Monitoring: Track water and energy usage to manage costs.

To log in to the app, customers will need the new account number emailed to the address linked to their utilities account.
