Huntsville Hospital challenges ‘F’ safety grade

Huntsville Hospital has released a statement after receiving an “F” in the latest Leapfrog Hospital Safety report. The grade came from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit that issues safety ratings for hospitals twice a year.

Hospital calls survey “inaccurate”

In its response, hospital officials criticized the report’s accuracy. They explained that Huntsville Hospital did not submit the voluntary 353-page survey. Despite this, Leapfrog still issued a grade.

According to the hospital, this led to a rating based on incomplete data. Officials called the process “unfair” to clinicians and staff who work around the clock to provide care.

National recognitions cited in defense

In contrast to the Leapfrog grade, hospital leaders pointed to other honors. For example, U.S. News & World Report ranks Huntsville Hospital as the second-best hospital in Alabama. The hospital is also fully accredited by The Joint Commission, which evaluates safety and quality using over 250 on-site standards.

Additionally, Huntsville Hospital has earned recognition from Healthgrades, Forbes, Newsweek, and Blue Cross Blue Shield for its programs in cardiac care, stroke, bariatrics, and maternity. Leaders said these honors reflect a broader picture of the hospital’s performance.

Hospital will complete future surveys

Although hospital officials still question the value of the Leapfrog system, they acknowledged the impact of public perception. As a result, both Huntsville and Madison hospitals plan to complete future Leapfrog surveys.

“We would rather have staff members focused on patient care,” the statement said. “But allowing any group to suggest we don’t prioritize safety is an affront to our caregivers.”

Leaders also noted that mortality data used in Leapfrog’s system does not account for the severity of illnesses treated. Huntsville Hospital often accepts complex transfer cases from across North Alabama and southern Tennessee.

To monitor and improve quality, the hospital participates in several national clinical databases. These include registries for cardiac surgery, neonatology, trauma, and cancer care.

Both Huntsville Hospital and Madison Hospital received “F” grades in Leapfrog’s latest report.
