Big Spoon Creamery brings back chef-inspired flavors

Last year’s “Local Chef Series” at Big Spoon Creamery was such a hit that the small-batch Alabama ice cream company is bringing it back for another season.

Monthly chef collaborations begin this month

Starting in November and running through March, the Birmingham-based creamery, located in Avondale, Homewood, and Huntsville, will team up with a different Alabama chef each month to craft a unique flavor.

Kicking things off, Birmingham chef Jonathan Harrison’s sage and cornbread-inspired creation will be available at all Big Spoon Creamery locations beginning Friday, Nov. 1. A special pop-up event featuring Harrison’s flavor, along with hors d’oeuvres and a composed sundae, is set for Friday, Nov. 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Big Spoon’s Avondale shop.

Chef lineup for 2024 local chef series

“We’re excited to bring back our local chef series for its second year,” shared Ryan O’Hara, who co-owns Big Spoon Creamery with his wife, Geri-Martha O’Hara, in a media release. “We carefully selected these chefs because they are friends with whom we share strong connections; they bring fresh and inventive perspectives to their craft, and we hold each in high esteem.

“We’re thrilled to spotlight each chef and let their creative take on food shine through our collaborative ice cream flavors.”

The chefs featured in the coming months include:

December: Ryan Westover of Pizza Grace.

January: Jesús Méndez of Salud

February: Roscoe Hall

March: Wil Drake of Hero

Big Spoon Creamery will announce each month’s flavor and pop-up event details on its social media channels.

The Story Behind Big Spoon Creamery

The O’Haras started their small-batch ice cream venture in 2014 with a pop-up in their Bluff Park driveway. They opened their first permanent location in Avondale in 2017, added a second shop in Homewood in 2019, and expanded to Huntsville in 2023.
