The Greene Street Market at Nativity

Hey Huntsville! Are you looking for a great place to shop for local, fresh produce and artisan-made products? Look no further than the Greene Street Market!

The Greene Street Market is held every Thursday from May to October, and it is chocked full of new and exciting things to look at.

What Can I Find at the Greene Street Market?

Produce

The market has a little bit of everything. There are a few vendors who sell produce that comes straight from their farms. Early in the season, the market is filled with people seeking fresh strawberries – a fruit that is ready early in the harvesting season. As the season goes on, the focus shifts to melons, tomatoes, corn, apples, and even pumpkins!

The vendors, of course, also have produce that lasts throughout the season like okra, potatoes, squash, and beans.

Prepared Foods

There is also a great chance to purchase foods that have already been prepared by others when you visit the Greene Street Market. If you are interested in canned goods – take a look!

There are a few vendors who sell canned products like salsa and pickled vegetables.

The bread and butter pickles at the ‘The Mason Jar’ have a special place in mine and my family’s heart.

There are also vendors who sell pastries, like fresh baked bread and cinnamon rolls, as well as sweet treats like mini pies.

You can also find food trucks, usually located at the very end! You can grab a freshly squeezed lemonade or a fried meal from one of the food trucks to snack on while you shop.

There is even a vendor called Suzy’s Pops that sells gourmet popsicles. The cookies and cream is a must (though I have heard good things about her ‘boozy popsicles’ as well)!

Meat

There is even the chance to purchase meat at the Market!

Gore Farms sells poultry meats (chicken and turkey), and a vendor comes once a month with fresh caught seafood from the coast.

Beauty and Skincare

The market also has several vendors who sell naturally made soaps and lotions. Many of which feature goats milk.

Delfryn Fach Farm offers a variety of goat’s milk lotions to moisturize and soothe dry skin.

Seriously Simple Soaps has an ever changing variety of essential oil based cold processed soaps. They even offer cute, seasonally designed soaps, like pumpkins for the fall, and cute little ducky soaps in the summer.

Literally Everything Else

If you can think of it, Greene Street probably has someone who comes by to sell it. They may not be there every week, but they’ll be there occasionally.

From pet treats and products (the sales of which benefit pet rescue), to wooden signs, to metal outdoor statues, to fresh cut flowers, to jewelry, there’s something there for everyone.

There is even a vendor who sells a variety of food grade mushroom products called ‘Fungalicious.’

With a variety of vendors and new ones coming in all of the time, there is always something new and exciting to check out.

Is Greene Street Market Child/Pet Friendly?

One of the great things about Greene Street Market is that it is child and pet-friendly.

There is always a free children’s activity going on at Greene Street. Usually set up in a shaded area, there are typically children’s outdoor toys, as well as the occasional art project or planned game. Kids love it at Greene Street!

Greene Street also welcomes leashed pets, who are welcome to look around with their owner.

It is an important consideration to make when bringing pets that Greene Street takes place in a blacktop paved parking lot in some of the hottest months of the year. This causes an inherent risk to their paw pads, which should be considered when bringing them.

What if I Don’t Want to Spend Money?

Not a problem!

Though there are a lot of opportunities to purchase things at Greene Street, you are more than welcome to come and look around and simply enjoy the atmosphere.

Greene Street organizes a live music act every week to come out and play and sing for the shoppers. It’s a great opportunity to come and listen to some free music.

Greene Street Market Pro Tips:

Here are some things I have learned from my visit to the Market at Greene Street:

Not all vendors can accept card payment

Never fear, though! The Greene Street workers are happy to help. You can bring a card to the information booth in the back, and charge it for a set amount of money. They will then provide you with the equivalency of that money in wooden discs (valued at a dollar) and ten dollar vouchers. You can spend this money as normal, and the vendors will return any change to you in cash.

Come early if you’re looking for the ‘hot’ produce

Some of the vendors, especially Campbell Farms will sell out of their more seasonal items early in the day. So if you’re looking to get strawberries, corn, or the like, you may want to arrive when the market opens, at 3pm. There were some days where the seasonal produce would be sold out by 4:30.

Keep in mind what you are bringing home

If you live in the area, it may be tempting to walk or bike to the market, but keep in mind that you may be going back home with several pounds worth of produce and plan accordingly. It’s awfully hard to ride a bike and hold a watermelon!

If you are looking to be more sustainable – bring your own bags!

The market is a great, sustainable option. Though if you are looking to be more sustainable, a great thing to do is bring a reusable bag. Most vendors are more than happy to forgo using their own plastic bags in place of a reusable bag that you brought.

The Greene Street Market can get hot!

If you are sensitive to heat, you may want to visit Greene Street later in the evening, when the temperature has dropped some. It’s simply a fact of life that harvesting season in the South is also the hottest part of the year, so market season is during the hottest part of the year too! Bring a drink and a neck cooling towel and enjoy the heat!

Overall Opinions of The Greene Street Market

Greene Street is a great option to purchase fresh produce, enjoy live entertainment and children’s activities, and find all different handmade products! The people who help run the market and the vendors are fantastic! If you are unsure of anything, just ask! If the person you ask can’t help you, they’ll direct you to someone who can.

We definitely recommend a visit to the market next season!
