Alabama A&M University has been selected to participate in a new initiative from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) aimed at expanding innovation and entrepreneurship across the Southeast.
Alabama A&M Chosen for USPTO Expansion Program
The USPTO selected Alabama A&M University as part of its Community Engagement Office expansion, which focuses on supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The university joins the Atlanta University Center Consortium, which includes institutions such as Morehouse College and Spelman College.
The program seeks to connect students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and small businesses with intellectual property resources and patent education.
Huntsville Recognized as an Innovation Hub
The USPTO highlighted Huntsville’s strong innovation ecosystem as one of the reasons for selecting Alabama A&M. The region continues to play a leading role in industries such as aerospace, advanced manufacturing, defense technology, and space research.
In addition, Huntsville benefits from major research institutions and federal partners, including NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and Redstone Arsenal. These organizations help drive new technologies and support economic growth throughout North Alabama.
New Opportunities for Students and Entrepreneurs
Through the initiative, Alabama A&M will gain greater access to programs that support inventors and innovators. Participants will be able to explore patent education, commercialization resources, and entrepreneurship opportunities.
The university will also have access to the USPTO Patent Pro Bono Program, which provides qualifying inventors with free patent legal assistance. Furthermore, participants can connect with HBCU-based law school clinics throughout the Southeast for additional intellectual property support.
University leaders said the partnership will strengthen research, encourage innovation, and help transform new ideas into real-world solutions that benefit both the Huntsville community and the broader region.
