Madison has approved a new contract aimed at helping officials oversee short-term rental properties throughout the city. The agreement provides tools to monitor rental activity and support enforcement of recently adopted regulations.
Madison Approves Short-Term Rental Monitoring Program
City leaders approved an $8,000 contract with Deckard Technologies to assist with monitoring short-term rentals operating within Madison city limits.
The company’s Rentalscape software will help track rental properties and provide a system for reporting concerns. As a result, city officials will have additional resources to ensure rental operators follow local requirements.
New Rules Apply to Airbnb and Vacation Rentals
Earlier this year, Madison approved regulations governing short-term rentals, including properties listed through platforms such as Airbnb and VRBO.
Under the ordinance, property owners must obtain a permit before operating a short-term rental. In addition, permits must be renewed annually.
The city also established a cap on the total number of permitted short-term rentals. Furthermore, hosts must notify nearby residents when they plan to operate a rental property.
Compliance Requirements for Property Owners
Several additional requirements are now in place for short-term rental operators.
For example, each property must have a local contact person available if issues arise. Likewise, rentals located within homeowners association neighborhoods may need HOA approval before receiving permission to operate.
The city can also take action against properties that receive repeated complaints. If a rental receives multiple verified complaints within a year, officials may suspend its permit.
The new monitoring system is expected to help Madison enforce these standards while balancing neighborhood concerns and the growing popularity of short-term rental accommodations.
