The Huntsville Hospital Health System has received unanimous state approval to build a $14 million outpatient medical facility in Moulton.
New Outpatient Center Planned for Moulton
The 10,000-square-foot center will rise along Highway 24 in Moulton on a 20-acre site designed for future expansion, convenient parking and easy access for residents across Lawrence County.
Decatur Morgan Hospital will oversee development and management of the new facility. The project follows the closure of inpatient services at Lawrence Medical Center last May, which left many residents traveling outside the county for routine care.
Focus on Primary and Preventive Care
The outpatient center will offer extended-hours urgent care, diagnostic imaging, lab services, respiratory therapy and physical therapy. Plans also include a community education room to host health programs and outreach initiatives.
Hospital leaders say the facility will prioritize primary and preventive care, including screenings such as mammograms, PSA testing and colonoscopies. A new primary care physician, Dr. J.C. Avery, is expected to join the practice this summer, with additional providers planned in the future.
Not a Full Emergency Room
While the center will expand access to care, it will not operate as a full-service emergency room. Some residents have voiced concerns about the lack of local ER services, citing long travel times during emergencies.
Health system leaders say the facility’s extended hours and streamlined design will provide “easy in and easy out” care, helping reduce wait times for urgent needs. Construction is expected to begin in May, with completion projected within 14 to 16 months.
