Officials puts accessibility at the center of new development

Huntsville officials are making accessibility a key part of new developments and renovations as the city continues to expand.

Accessibility starts during the design process

City officials say new public spaces must meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). However, Huntsville’s approach aims to go beyond simply meeting those legal standards.

Ricky Wilkinson with the city’s General Services Department said design teams review accessibility during the planning process. This approach helps ensure that residents and visitors can use parks, buildings, and other public facilities.

Rather than adding accessibility features after construction, the city wants designers to consider them from the beginning.

Local groups help identify community needs

Huntsville also works with local disability organizations to better understand the challenges residents may face when using public spaces.

These partnerships can help city planners spot barriers that standard design reviews might miss. In turn, community feedback can shape improvements that make facilities easier to navigate and enjoy.

City officials say this collaboration supports a broader goal of creating spaces that welcome people with different abilities.

Big Spring Park East among projects

The Big Spring Park East expansion is one of the projects incorporating accessibility into its design. As Huntsville develops more parks and public facilities, officials say they will continue applying the same approach.

Ultimately, the city wants accessibility to remain part of Huntsville’s growth rather than something added later. This could help create more welcoming public spaces for residents and visitors as the Rocket City continues to develop.
