Major bridge project could transform Decatur traffic

According to the Decatur Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, a potential $140 million replacement for the Hudson Memorial Bridge is the leading project in a proposed transportation plan designed to address the region’s future growth and mobility needs.

New Bridge Project Leads Decatur Transportation Plan

The MPO is developing a 25-year transportation strategy that identifies major road and infrastructure projects across the Decatur area.

At the top of the list is a new crossing over the Tennessee River along the U.S. 31 and Alabama 20 corridor. The proposed project would replace the existing Hudson Memorial Bridge, which officials say experiences heavy traffic congestion during peak commuting hours.

The bridge serves as a key route for workers traveling throughout North Alabama, including employees heading to major employers in the Huntsville and Decatur areas. With continued population and economic growth, transportation officials say improving river access has become a growing priority.

Funding Supports Additional Bridge Planning

Officials previously completed a feasibility study for a potential replacement in 2024. Now, another study is moving forward after the project received $10 million in funding.

The additional study will examine options and help advance early engineering work needed before construction could begin. The Alabama Department of Transportation is expected to oversee the process and select a consultant for the study.

The current southbound bridge opened in the early 1960s. The crossing has been updated over the years, but officials say a larger replacement project would require significant federal support.

Transportation planners estimate that a future bridge project would likely depend on a combination of federal and local funding.

Long-Term Road Improvements Also Planned

The proposed transportation plan includes several other projects aimed at improving traffic flow throughout the Decatur region.

Officials are considering road expansions, interstate improvements, and interchange upgrades along several major routes. These include improvements along Alabama 67, Interstate 65, U.S. 31, State Route 20, Alabama 36, and other heavily traveled corridors.

The projects are part of a broader effort to prepare local infrastructure for continued residential and economic development.

Residents Can Provide Feedback

The Decatur Area MPO is currently gathering public input on the long-range transportation plan.
Residents can submit comments through Aug. 7 as officials review community priorities before finalizing the document.

The MPO plans to complete the transportation plan in September. Once approved, the plan will help guide future infrastructure investments and transportation decisions across the Decatur area.
