According to the Huntsville Police Department, applications are now open for police dispatcher positions, offering residents an opportunity to begin a career supporting emergency response efforts across the city.
HPD Looking for New Police Dispatchers
Police dispatchers serve as the first point of contact for many people during emergencies. They answer both emergency and non-emergency calls, collect important details, and send the appropriate responders to each situation.
HPD Sergeant Dana Springfield said dispatchers play a key role throughout every emergency response, from the initial call to updates provided by officers in the field.
The role requires strong communication skills, patience, and the ability to stay calm while handling high-pressure situations.
Requirements and Application Timeline
HPD began accepting applications on June 8, and interested candidates can apply through Aug. 10.
Before moving forward in the hiring process, applicants must complete an aptitude test. Testing is available from July 6 through Aug. 24, and candidates must pass the exam before they can be considered for an interview.
Applicants must meet these requirements:
Be at least 18 years old
Have a high school diploma or GED
Hold a valid driver’s license
Type at least 30 words per minute
Candidates who advance in the process may also complete additional steps, including an interview, drug screening, and polygraph examination.
Competitive Pay and Benefits Offered
The police dispatcher position starts at $47,070.40 annually. Employees also receive City of Huntsville benefits beginning on their first day of employment.
HPD says the starting salary ranks among the most competitive dispatcher wages in Alabama.
