More than $393 million in road projects are reshaping the Huntsville metro, with major construction underway on I-565, Martin Road, Northern Bypass, and several high-traffic corridors.
The biggest projects moving forward
I-565 widening remains one of the region’s largest active projects. Crews have completed about 45% of the $41.8 million expansion between Wall Triana Highway and County Line Road, with completion expected in fiscal 2027. Bridge work continues while additional travel lanes take shape along one of Huntsville’s busiest commuter routes.
Meanwhile, the Northern Bypass is now 76% complete. The new Memorial Parkway intersection has already opened, and the project is expected to finish later this year. City leaders say the bypass will ease traffic for drivers traveling between North Huntsville, southern Tennessee, and Research Park.
The Martin Road Phase 2 project has also reached 85% completion. Three lanes have reopened between Wall Triana Highway and Old Jim Williams Road, while railroad crossing improvements are scheduled to continue this month.
Which roads are next in line?
Several widening projects are advancing through design and right-of-way acquisition.
The largest is the U.S. 72 widening, a three-phase, $92.2 million project stretching from Providence Main to County Line Road. Construction is expected to begin in stages between fiscal 2027 and 2030.
Other projects expected to begin as early as fiscal 2027 include:
Winchester Road: $28 million widening project
Jeff Road: $13.5 million lane expansion
Blake Bottom Road: $20.8 million widening between Jeff Road and Alabama 255
Additionally, work has officially started on the Alabama 53 widening project, where crews are currently clearing the construction corridor.
What drivers should expect
Construction will continue across several key intersections through the coming months.
The Mastin Lake Road overpass on North Memorial Parkway is about 85% complete, with the full intersection expected to reopen in mid-October after paving finishes beneath the bridge.
Looking further ahead, Huntsville and ALDOT continue planning the Arsenal East Connector and a future redesign of the I-565/Memorial Parkway interchange. Both projects aim to improve long-term traffic flow as the region continues to grow.
With new employers, residential developments, and population growth driving higher traffic volumes, these infrastructure projects are expected to shape commuting across Huntsville for years to come.
