Construction begins on $17M Student Union at Calhoun Community College

Work has begun on a new $17 million Student Union building at Calhoun Community College, according to online reports.

New Student Union to Serve as Campus Hub

The city of Decatur recently issued a building permit for the two-story, 29,800-square-foot facility along U.S. 31. The project marks the largest construction effort in the Huntsville area since March 6.

Lee Builders of Huntsville is handling construction. The firm has worked on several major projects, including the $28 million Joe Davis Stadium renovation and the $70 million Champman and STEM Magnet Middle School.

Design Focuses on Community and Learning

The Student Union is designed as a multifunctional space for socializing, studying, and dining. The first floor will feature a social seating lobby, coffee shop, bookstore, and a multifunctional student commons. The lobby connects to a commercial kitchen and dining area, offering more food options and potential future culinary programs.

The second floor includes a library, independent study pods, a computer training area, staff offices, and a flexible meeting room. Outdoor areas will feature seating, canopies, and planters, giving students options for both group gatherings and individual study.

The building combines contemporary and traditional architectural styles. A two-story glass atrium will serve as the main lobby and gateway to the facility.

Collaborative Effort with Multiple Partners

Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) provided architecture, civil engineering, geotechnical, and landscape services. Additional project partners include Jackson Renfro & Associates, MW/Davis Dumas & Associates, Slaton Designworks, Tucker-Jones Engineers, and Camacho Associates.

The Calhoun project is part of a busy period for construction in the region. Since March 6, Madison, Limestone, and Morgan counties have issued 372 permits totaling $128.5 million. Notable local projects include warehouse expansions, industrial alterations, and new homes, with Lennar Homes and Davidson Homes leading residential development in the area.
