Brown Bear Canoe and Kayak Rentals is closing

Brown Bear Canoe and Kayak Rentals has announced that its 2026 season will be its last, bringing an end to a decade of river adventures on the Flint River.

A decade of Flint River adventures

The seasonal business began in 2017 as a hobby built around a love of the river. Over the years, Brown Bear grew into a popular destination for families, visitors and longtime North Alabama residents looking to explore the Flint River.

The business said it has helped thousands of people experience the river, with many visitors trying activities such as canoeing and kayaking for the first time. Brown Bear also focused on conservation and educating visitors about the importance of protecting the area’s natural resources.

Rising costs and an uncertain lease led to the decision

Brown Bear operated on property held in a family trust. After beginning with a one-year lease in 2017, the business remained on a month-to-month arrangement for nearly nine years.

The owners said uncertainty surrounding the property, combined with the challenges of running a seasonal business, made continuing too risky. Weather also affected recent seasons, with drought limiting operations in some years and heavy rain disrupting key weekends in 2026.

Operating costs, including insurance, fuel, vehicle maintenance and labor, also continued to increase. The owners said they could not justify taking on significant debt without knowing whether the property would remain available for future seasons.

Brown Bear will continue through October

Although the 2026 season will be the final one at the current property, Brown Bear’s owners said they are open to opportunities that could allow the business to continue elsewhere.

For now, canoe and kayak trips will continue on weekends through most of October, with weekday trips available by reservation. Low water levels have limited operations to the lower eight-mile route.

The business’s Annual Native American Knap-In will serve as its final major event. Brown Bear will also hold a boat and clearance sale Oct. 23-25, with the property available for parking through Nov. 1. Field trips will continue throughout October.

After 10 seasons, the owners said they plan to remain connected to the Flint River and continue supporting organizations that work to protect it.
