Huntsville is asking residents to share their experiences and ideas as the city studies traffic safety along an 8.85-mile stretch of Governors Drive.
Open house set for September 29
The city will host a community open house on Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 4-8 p.m. at The Gathering Place inside First Baptist Church at 600 Governors Drive SW.
Residents can speak with members of the City’s Planning Department and the project consulting team, Alta Planning + Design, about safety concerns and potential improvements along the corridor.
Study covers a major Huntsville corridor
The study area stretches from 14th Street on the west to Caldwell Lane in the Big Cove area. The project is examining conditions for people who drive, walk, bike, use mobility devices and ride Huntsville Transit.
The medical district around Huntsville Hospital is receiving particular attention because of the large number of pedestrians who travel through the area.
City planners and consultants have already gathered feedback through walking tours, an online survey and pop-up community events. The upcoming open house will provide another opportunity for residents to weigh in.
Free transit rides available
Huntsville Transit will provide free rides to and from the open house. Several transit stops are located within a quarter-mile of the church.
Riders should let the bus operator know they are attending the Governors Drive Safety Study Open House. The meeting location is also ADA accessible.
Feedback collected through the study will help the city develop a plan for addressing traffic safety challenges and identifying improvements along Governors Drive.
