Job seekers warned of remote work scam linked to Huntsville

Job seekers should take extra care when applying for remote positions after BBB North Alabama received multiple reports about a suspected employment scam tied to a Huntsville business name.

Fake remote jobs raise concerns

According to online reports, BBB North Alabama received at least nine complaints during the week of August 10 involving remote data entry jobs advertised through Indeed and ZipRecruiter.

The reported offers used the name of Parkway Greenhouse LLC or a similar business name. Applicants said they communicated with someone using the name “Daniel Munoz” before completing a short online questionnaire.

Several applicants then received job offers and onboarding paperwork that requested bank information for direct deposit.

Some also said the supposed employer promised to send checks to cover computer equipment.

BBB has not found evidence connecting the legitimate businesses with the reported scam. State records show businesses with similar names, but neither lists the address included in the job offers.

Watch for common employment scam tactics

Employment scams can target job seekers with promises of easy remote work and fast hiring. BBB’s 2025 Scam Tracker Risk Report ranked employment scams as the second-riskiest consumer scam category, with a median reported loss of $1,000.

Common warning signs include:

  • Requests for bank or financial information before verifying the employer
  • Job offers after only a brief questionnaire or minimal interview
  • Checks sent to cover equipment purchases
  • Requests to deposit money and send part of it elsewhere
  • Jobs that require applicants to pay fees or taxes before receiving earnings
  • Offers with unusually high pay and few qualifications
  • Scammers may also use real company names, making independent verification especially important.

How Huntsville-area job seekers can protect themselves

Before accepting a remote position, applicants should research the company independently and verify the recruiter through official contact information.

Job seekers should also avoid sending sensitive financial information until they confirm that the employer and position are legitimate.

A check for home-office equipment should also raise concerns. A fraudulent check can initially appear to clear before the bank identifies it as fake, leaving the recipient responsible for the money.

Additionally, job seekers should avoid positions that require them to receive and reship packages. Scammers can use these jobs to move merchandise obtained through fraud.

Anyone who encounters a suspicious employment offer can report it through BBB Scam Tracker and help others recognize similar schemes.
