Huntsville plans to add a traffic signal and turn lanes beneath Memorial Parkway, improving access to the area near Joe Davis Stadium.
Changes coming to the Memorial Parkway access road
According to online reports, the City of Huntsville has awarded Rogers Group a construction contract for improvements at the access road intersection between Drake Avenue and Airport Road.
The project will turn the existing access road beneath the Memorial Parkway overpass into a fully signalized intersection.
The changes will not affect traffic traveling along Memorial Parkway itself. However, drivers using the nearby service road should expect lane closures during construction.
New turn lanes will improve access
The project will add dedicated turn lanes along with the new traffic signal. These improvements will help drivers reach new developments around Joe Davis Stadium from multiple directions.
The intersection will also operate differently from other underpasses in the area. Therefore, drivers should watch for traffic signals, signs, and other control devices when traveling through the intersection.
Construction expected to begin next year
The city expects construction to begin early next year after contractors secure the necessary materials.
Once work begins, officials anticipate completing the project within approximately 90 days.
Drivers who regularly use the access roads near Memorial Parkway, Drake Avenue, or Airport Road should plan for temporary traffic changes as construction gets underway.
