Decatur leaders are preparing to open a new $52 million recreation center later this year, according to online reports.
Opening Timeline and Project Overview
City officials are targeting a grand opening around Labor Day weekend. The new facility sits at Wilson Morgan Park along Beltline Road.
Parks and Recreation Director Hunter Allen said the city expects to receive the building in early August. After that, staff will prepare the space and complete training before welcoming visitors.
The project is currently under budget. As a result, leaders see it as both a major upgrade and a strong investment for the community.
Features Inside the Facility
The two-story, 100,000-square-foot center will offer a wide range of amenities. It will include four basketball courts and a 10-lane indoor pool. Therefore, the space can host both competitive events and daily recreation.
In addition, the second floor will feature a walking track. The building will also include flexible rooms for classes, fitness programs, and community meetings.
Fitness and cardio equipment will be placed throughout the facility. This layout allows visitors to stay active in multiple areas of the building.
Outdoor Upgrades and Community Impact
The project also includes several outdoor improvements. A new courtyard will overlook Wilson Morgan Lake, creating space for events and relaxation.
In addition, the city is building a $1 million inclusive playground nearby. Plans also include green space, walking trails, and a dog park. Meanwhile, existing softball fields will remain in use.
City leaders say the full park upgrade will enhance quality of life for residents. Furthermore, it will attract visitors and support community events throughout the year.
