Huntsville Hospital has introduced a new treatment option for adults with certain blood disorders, according to online reports.
New Blood Exchange Service for Adults
The hospital recently launched an outpatient red blood cell exchange service, also known as RBCx, through its dialysis unit. This treatment focuses on patients with conditions such as sickle cell disease.
With this addition, patients can now receive specialized care locally. Previously, many had to travel to other cities for similar treatment.
How the Treatment Works
During RBCx, a machine removes a patient’s blood and filters out damaged red blood cells. It then replaces them with healthy donor cells mixed with plasma or saline.
The process usually takes about 90 minutes. In many cases, patients repeat the treatment on a regular schedule. As a result, it can help prevent complications like pain crises, anemia, and organ damage.
Hospital staff spent about a year preparing for the program. However, because the team already offers similar therapies, they adapted quickly to the new system.
Expanding Local Care Options
Hospital leaders say the new service fills an important gap in care. In fact, dozens of patients in the Huntsville area could benefit from RBCx treatments.
One local patient shared that he previously relied on other methods or traveled out of town for care. Now, he can receive treatment closer to home. Therefore, the new program improves both convenience and quality of life.
The service operates within the hospital’s dialysis unit, one of the largest in North Alabama. Officials say expanding access to advanced treatments remains a top priority for the community.
