Huntsville ranks no. 2 among U.S. large cities in Milken’s Best Performing List

Huntsville’s booming aerospace, defense, and tech sectors helped the Rocket City climb to second place nationally for job growth, wage increases, and high-tech GDP expansion, according to online reports.

Huntsville’s Economic Growth Rockets Forward

Huntsville moved up from No. 4 last year to No. 2 on the Milken Institute’s annual list of Best Performing Cities for 2025. Only the Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers metro area in Arkansas ranked higher.

The city has strengthened its reputation as a major hub for defense and aerospace. Key employers like Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, and government centers such as Redstone Arsenal and the Marshall Space Flight Center continue to drive growth.

Strong Job, Wage, and Tech Gains

The Milken index highlights Huntsville’s impressive five-year growth:

Job growth: 16.6% (5th nationally)

Wage growth: 43.6%

High-tech GDP growth: 40.9%

These gains reflect the city’s ability to attract talent, expand high-tech industries, and sustain strong economic performance, even in a cooling national economy.

Auburn-Opelika Shines Among Small Cities

Auburn-Opelika also made the list, ranking No. 10 among small cities nationwide. It was the only small city in the Southeast to reach Tier 1.
Milken cites Auburn University as the cornerstone of the metro’s economy. The university adds more than 5,500 jobs to the area and continuously produces high-skilled graduates, supporting steady growth for local businesses and industries.

Both Huntsville and Auburn-Opelika have now appeared in consecutive years on Milken’s top 10 list, demonstrating the long-term strength of Alabama’s metro economies.
