Huntsville’s Von Braun Center has put a pause on its newly introduced 75-cent technology fee after receiving public complaints, according to online reports.
Fee Was Introduced Earlier This Month
The city-owned venue began adding the 75-cent charge to each transaction at concessions, bars, and parking on November 10. The fee was intended to help cover the cost of ongoing technology and infrastructure upgrades throughout the facility.
Public Pushback Led to a Quick Suspension
According to online reports, the Von Braun Center halted the fee just five days after rollout, following concerns raised by attendees at a Huntsville Havoc hockey game. The fee had generated roughly $5,800 before the pause. Leadership said they stopped the charge immediately in order to review feedback and reassess how best to support upgrades while remaining transparent and responsive to visitors.
Technology Investments and Budget Challenges
Recent upgrades at the VBC include walk-through security scanners, updated point-of-sale systems, new digital signage, an automated door keycard system, and enhanced Wi-Fi infrastructure. Additional improvements have been made to sound and lighting systems in Propst Arena, the Mark C. Smith Concert Hall, and Mars Music Hall.
According to online reports, the facility plans to keep the fee suspension in place indefinitely while evaluating alternatives. The VBC reported a $5 million operational loss in 2024, which was covered by the City of Huntsville.
