The Huntsville City Council has approved the sale of land that will make way for a $240 million shopping center at North Memorial Parkway and Bob Wade Lane, featuring a Home Depot and a Target superstore.
North Village Center Details
The new development, called North Village Center, will cover more than 500,000 square feet and include multiple national retailers, restaurants, and space for local and regional businesses. It will be located near the recently opened Food City and additional commercial projects in the area. Construction is expected to begin in late Q1 or early Q2 of 2026, with the first stores opening in 2027.
City Urban and Economic Development Director Shane Davis said the Home Depot and Target developers are eager to start construction as soon as possible. “They want to hit the ground running and get their capital approved to start making construction schedules,” Davis said in an interview.
Community and Economic Impact
Council members praised the project as a major boost for North Huntsville. District 1 Councilwoman Michelle Watkins called it “something we’ve been waiting on for a very long time.” Council President Jennie Robinson noted the center will benefit not only District 1 residents but also shoppers from northern areas, including Meridianville and Hazel Green.
The city previously purchased the land for just over $10 million and will sell it at market value, generating a net transactional gain of more than $881,000, which includes a parcel sold to Express Oil Change.
Ongoing Development Momentum
The North Village Center project builds on the success of nearby developments, including Food City, Starbucks, and Circle K locations. Davis said the city continues to negotiate additional retail contracts for the site and expects North Village Center to be part of a broader phase-two expansion in the future. Food City developers are also considering adding a few more stores in Huntsville, potentially in the southern or western parts of the city.
“This will be a best-in-class retail development,” Davis said, noting the project’s potential to attract shoppers and further stimulate growth in the area.
