The University of North Alabama in Florence has earned a spot on Billboard’s 2025 list of top music business schools, joining Auburn University as Alabama’s representatives. This marks UNA’s first appearance on the prestigious list, highlighting the program’s growing influence in music education.
UNA’s Department of Entertainment Industry
Billboard recognized UNA for its courses on songwriting and business, taught by Alabama native and multiple Grammy winner John Paul White. The program introduces students to sectors including labels, publishing, licensing, streaming, and touring.
Now in its 50th year, UNA’s Department of Entertainment Industry provides hands-on experience and fosters real-world connections. Its proximity to Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, Nashville, Memphis, and Atlanta gives students access to studios, labels, venues, and artist managers.
Preparing the next generation of music leaders
Students benefit from internships and mentorships with industry professionals. Notable alumni include managers like Cody Payne and award-winning producer-directors such as Ben Skipworth. Guest speakers have included Sol Philcox Littlefield and Jimbo Hart, former bassist for Jason Isbell’s 400 Unit.
How Billboard selects its top schools
For more than a decade, Billboard has recognized schools that prepare the next generation of music industry leaders, artists, and producers. The list evaluates programs based on:
- Industry recommendations
- Alumni achievements, including information from Billboard’s multiple power lists
- Billboard’s reporting on educational options
- Data provided directly by schools
This methodology ensures that the list reflects programs that teach both creative and business skills essential for success in the music industry.
Auburn University continues its rise
Auburn University also made the list for the second year in a row. Its Commercial Music major and Music Business minor equip students for careers at global music companies, including Sony Records and William Morris Endeavor. The program features a new state-of-the-art recording studio and experiential courses like Record Company Procedures, where students create a label, work with artists, and manage marketing within a budget.
UNA’s recognition reinforces the university’s commitment to producing the next generation of music business leaders in North Alabama through innovation, industry connections, and hands-on learning.
