Mayor’s Tree Planting Day Returns Nov. 1

Huntsville is inviting residents to dig in and make a difference for the environment. According to online reports, Mayor Tommy Battle and the City’s Green Team will host the annual Mayor’s Tree Planting Day on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 9 a.m. to noon at Brahan Spring Park.

Growing Huntsville’s Green Future

The event brings together volunteers from across the community to help expand Huntsville’s tree canopy—one of the city’s most valuable natural resources. Green Team will prepare hundreds of planting sites and provide tools, supplies, and on-site guidance for participants of all ages.

Mayor Battle, City Arborist Marc Byers, and Green Team members will share best practices for planting and discuss the environmental and economic benefits of trees. As the mayor emphasized, expanding green spaces is an investment in Huntsville’s livability and sustainability.

Why Planting Trees Matters

Trees not only enhance the beauty of neighborhoods but also improve air quality, lower energy costs, and provide essential shade throughout the city. Experts note that fall planting offers the best conditions for long-term tree health, allowing roots to establish before the stress of summer heat.

Since its inception in 2014, the Mayor’s Tree Planting Day has led to the addition of nearly 2,800 trees across major city parks, including John Hunt Park and Brahan Spring Park. This year’s event will add several hundred more.

How to Get Involved

Green Team’s efforts go beyond planting trees. The group also leads community cleanup drives, recycling education, and beautification initiatives that support Huntsville’s sustainability goals.

Volunteers at the Nov. 1 event will receive free seedling trees while supplies last, thanks to partnerships with the Alabama Urban Forestry Association, the Arbor Day Foundation, and International Paper.

Those unable to attend can still contribute, Green Team will host another community planting on Saturday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to noon at Cavalry Hill Community Center on Fairbanks Street NW.
