Huntsville funds historic preservation for Magnolia Terrace, Brothers Heights

Huntsville is moving forward with efforts to list Magnolia Terrace and Brothers Heights/Gurley Additions on the National Register of Historic Places.

Project Funding and Agreement

The City has approved a contract with Dr. Caroline Swope of Kingstree Studios to handle the nomination process. The $35,000 project is funded partly by a Certified Local Government (CLG) grant from the Alabama Historical Commission, which will cover 60% of the cost, with the remaining 40% paid by the City.

Unique Neighborhood Histories

Dr. Swope, who conducted a 2021 survey of the area, found that although Magnolia Terrace and Brothers Heights/Gurley Additions are neighboring communities, they have distinct histories, architectural styles, and community identities. The neighborhoods are located north of Holmes Avenue and west of Pulaski Pike.

Preserving Cultural Heritage

The City’s approval sets the stage for formal listing on the National Register. This effort continues Huntsville’s work to preserve historic sites connected to its Black community, following previous designations like Normal Historic District, Edmonton Heights, and Glenwood Cemetery.

With more than 250 properties across the two neighborhoods, the nominations will recognize their cultural significance and help protect these areas as part of Huntsville’s historical legacy.
