$78M Huntsville Pinhook Creek-Skybridge project advances

The Huntsville City Council has approved plans to move forward with the long-anticipated Sky Bridge project after nearly two decades of planning.

Federal Funding Secured

The city accepted $20 million in federal grant funding to help finance the project, which includes green space, flood mitigation measures, and two pedestrian bridges connecting downtown Huntsville to the Lowe Mill area.

According to the city’s Department of Urban and Economic Development, the first phase will focus on widening Pinhook Creek, with construction expected to begin shortly after the holidays. That phase is projected to be completed by early 2027.

Enhancing Connectivity and Walkability

The Sky Bridge is part of Huntsville’s broader effort to improve walkability and connect neighborhoods within and beyond the downtown area. City officials say the project will create safer, more accessible routes for pedestrians and cyclists while enhancing nearby greenways and public spaces.

Mixed Public Response

While city leaders emphasize the project’s long-term benefits, some residents have expressed concerns about spending priorities. Critics argue that the funds could be directed toward education, public safety, or homelessness programs.

Following the completion of the creek widening, construction will begin on the bridge, greenways, and park space. If work proceeds as planned, the Sky Bridge is expected to open by mid-2028.
