Lace up your skates, Huntsville. The city’s newest recreational attraction is now open with the official ribbon-cutting for the Stoner Park Skating Rink, the city’s first covered outdoor roller skating venue.
A $2.3 million community project
The skating rink was designed by Nola Van Peursem Architects and built by Butler Construction. The facility features an 85-by-185-foot rink under a 19,000-square-foot pavilion, developed on the site of the park’s former tennis courts. The $2.3 million project also includes new restrooms and direct access to other park amenities.
A response to community input
The rink was built in response to residents’ calls for more diverse recreational opportunities. Mayor Tommy Battle said the facility represents Huntsville’s investment in quality of life. District 1 Council Member Michelle Watkins emphasized its impact on her community, noting that it is the city’s only outdoor roller skating rink.
Part of a growing recreation hub
Located on 68 acres south of Stringfield Road and west of Pulaski Pike, Stoner Park continues to expand with amenities that include a playground, multi-purpose fields, and football, baseball and softball facilities. Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett said the new rink is designed to encourage residents to get active, explore and try new activities.
