Huntsville plans to annex 27 acres near Old Big Cove Road for residential development

As talks continue on a Village of Providence-style development near Old Big Cove Road, Huntsville is preparing to annex 27 more acres for single-family homes.

New Development in Southeast Huntsville

The Huntsville City Council introduced a resolution Thursday to annex land west of Old Big Cove Road and north of Buford Drive. Developer Louis Breland submitted the request. He leads Breland Properties and Breland Homes, and is known for building Town Madison and Clift Farm.

The Council plans to vote on the annexation during its May 22 meeting.

More Growth Near Big Cove Village Site

This land lies in one of Huntsville’s fastest-growing areas. It’s not far from the proposed Big Cove Village, which spans both sides of Cecil Ashburn Drive and borders Old Big Cove Road. Although that project is still under negotiation, the city already annexed the site last year and approved zoning for it. The land is set to include homes, townhomes, apartments, restaurants, and retail spaces.

School Capacity Raises Concerns

Huntsville has annexed over 500 acres in 2025, most of it in Limestone County. That includes nearly 400 acres near the I-65/I-565 interchange, just across from Decatur’s city limits. Plans for that site also follow the Village of Providence model, with a mix of homes and commercial space.

District 1 Councilwoman Michelle Watkins has raised concerns. She worries about the ability of Huntsville City Schools to handle more students. The same concern exists in the Big Cove area, where residents want a new high school. Many oppose the long, winding drive students now make to Huntsville High near downtown.
