What to Watch Out For: $400 Million Mill Creek Revitalization kicks off

Construction is set to begin in 2026 on the first residential buildings of Huntsville’s $400 million Mill Creek Choice Neighborhood Initiative.

First Phase Underway

City officials plan to start work on the southwest corner of the site, located between Clinton Avenue and Governors Drive west of Seminole Drive. This phase will include two new residential buildings designed to house former Johnson Towers residents, who will move into the new units before the old towers are demolished.

A Mixed-Income Community

The Mill Creek project is a partnership with the Huntsville Housing Authority and represents a $350 million investment in a mixed-income community. The development will include workforce housing, retail spaces, and medical and childcare services. Huntsville Hospital also plans to build housing on-site for its employees, further supporting the area’s workforce.

Funding and Timeline

The city is leveraging $50 million in federal funding from the HUD Choice Neighborhood Implementation Grant awarded in 2024. Under HUD’s terms, the housing must be completed within eight to ten years. Officials say construction on the first phase is expected to start in the first quarter of 2026, marking the beginning of a major revitalization near downtown Huntsville.
