According to the district, installation will take place from March 10 to March 14 during Spring Break, with the systems becoming operational on March 17 when students and staff return.
Part of a Larger Safety Initiative
This initiative represents the final stage of HCS’s broader safety plan, which began in early 2023 with the installation of Evolv weapon detection systems in high schools, followed by middle and junior high schools in Fall 2024.
Enhancing Security with Advanced Technology
“These upgrades demonstrate our commitment to ensuring a secure learning environment,” said HCS Superintendent Dr. Clarence Sutton. “Equipping all our schools with advanced detection technology reinforces our dedication to safety.”
HCS notes that the Opengate systems will expedite student entry, reducing disruptions. Commonly used at major sporting and entertainment venues, these systems will also be in place for athletic events and extracurricular activities.
