UAH’s MLK Leadership Breakfast highlights pathways to better health care for all

The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) hosted its second annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Breakfast, focusing on ways to improve healthcare access and equity for all.

Keynote Highlights: Catherine Coleman Flowers

Catherine Coleman Flowers, founder of the Center for Rural Enterprise and Environmental Justice (CREEJ), delivered the keynote address. She discussed her work addressing sanitation and health disparities in Lowndes County, Alabama.

Flowers emphasized the importance of community engagement and collaboration, noting how failed sewage systems contribute to widespread health issues. She also highlighted potential partnerships with organizations like NASA to develop innovative solutions for wastewater treatment that could help marginalized communities.

Shaping the Healthcare Community of the Future

The event, themed Shaping the Healthcare Community of the Future, included a panel discussion moderated by WHNT-19 anchor Tamika Alexander. Panelists included Flowers, Dr. Leon Lewis from Huntsville Hospital Health System, and UAH College of Nursing leaders.

UAH’s Neighborhood Nursing initiative was also featured. The program will send students, faculty, and volunteers into local neighborhoods to provide free preventive screenings, health education, and connections to care. Flowers described it as a “living classroom” that highlights the social determinants of health in real-world settings.

Serving Communities and Inspiring Action

Flowers drew connections between her rural upbringing and her advocacy work. She stressed that providing education and access to resources can break cycles of poverty and improve public health outcomes.

Dr. Lewis echoed the need for more healthcare providers in the Huntsville area to meet growing demand. Both leaders encouraged residents to become active in community health efforts.

The event was supported by numerous sponsors, including Nola VanPeursem Architects, Redstone Federal Credit Union, Huntsville Hospital Health System, Leidos, Madison County Commission, and others.
