The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) College of Nursing has launched Neighborhood Nursing, a new initiative aimed at reducing health disparities and improving life expectancy across North Alabama. The program is part of a multi-agency effort that connects education, research, and direct community outreach.
Community-Driven Public Health Model
Neighborhood Nursing takes a hands-on approach to preventive care, focusing on reaching residents where they live, work, and gather. The initiative aligns with UAH’s goal to integrate nursing education with community engagement while preparing students to address real-world healthcare challenges.
The program was announced during SHINE 2025 — the Symposium for Health Innovation and Neighborhood Engagement — which convened regional health leaders, researchers, and advocates to discuss strategies for improving outcomes in areas like maternal health, chronic disease, and veteran care.
Program Components and Partnerships
Neighborhood Nursing combines education, workforce development, and public health outreach. The initiative includes neighborhood health screening events across underserved communities such as Triana, Northwoods, and the Bob Harrison Wellness Center in partnership with organizations like Huntsville Hospital and Clearview Cancer Institute. Home visits will be conducted to assist homebound individuals, with particular focus on maternal health through the Nurse-Family Partnership program serving North Alabama counties.
The “Let’s Pretend Hospital” initiative, hosted at UAH since 1985, continues to introduce first-grade students to healthcare environments in an educational and positive way. Additionally, the SHINE podcast and advisory board will guide long-term strategy and strengthen collaboration among healthcare leaders and community advocates.
UAH’s College of Nursing will lead coordination, clinical supervision, and research efforts to ensure the program achieves measurable public health outcomes.
Community Support and Future Goals
Neighborhood Nursing has already received strong community backing, including a $50,000 seed donation from an anonymous UAH nursing alum. The college continues to welcome partnerships, volunteers, and financial support to expand the reach of the initiative.
