Thrive Alabama secures $5M for new Huntsville Health Center

Thrive Alabama recently welcomed former President George W. Bush to the Von Braun Center for a fundraising event supporting its capital campaign, When One Thrives, All Thrive. The initiative seeks to raise $8 million for a 72,000 sq. ft. healthcare facility in Northeast Huntsville, set to be built at the intersection of Oakwood Avenue and Washington Street.

Expanding healthcare access in Huntsville

The Huntsville Business Journal spoke with Thrive CEO Mary Elizabeth Marr following the event, where she highlighted the fundraiser’s success and the impact of the upcoming clinic. Currently serving 7,000 individuals, Thrive anticipates doubling its reach to 14,000 once the new center is operational. The expanded facility will increase exam rooms from 20 to 52 and offer comprehensive services, including behavioral health, substance abuse treatment, dental care, pediatrics, and nutrition services.

A presidential visit for a cause

The fundraiser, An Exclusive Conversation with George W. Bush, featured a fireside chat moderated by Huntsville Committee of 100 CEO John Allen and Troy7 President Lynn Troy. Marr noted that President Bush spoke about veterans’ healthcare, the role of community health centers, and his involvement with the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

Meeting the growing need for affordable care

With the event helping Thrive reach $5 million of its $8 million goal, Marr estimated that construction would take two years once groundbreaking begins. The organization, which operates in 12 Alabama counties, aims to bridge healthcare gaps and reduce unnecessary emergency room visits through its expansion.

According to Thrive, nearly 30% of Madison County residents live below 200% of the federal poverty level, underscoring the need for accessible care. Marr recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to advocate for healthcare funding for underserved populations across Huntsville and the southern U.S.
