Mazda is staying calm amid growing concerns over U.S. auto tariffs, even as taxes loom over vehicles made in Japan and Mexico.
Mazda takes a measured approach
Despite potential cost pressures, Mazda is not planning to scale back imports or shift operations at its Huntsville facility, according to Motor Trend. CEO Masahiro Moro indicated the company is holding off on price adjustments and watching how other automakers respond.
Industry response varies
Several competitors—Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, and Honda—have announced no price increases for their 2025 model-year vehicles in the U.S., while Hyundai plans to hold off on pricing changes until early June. These moves suggest a collective wait-and-see strategy across the industry.
Huntsville production holds steady
Mazda currently builds the CX-50 crossover at its shared plant with Toyota in Huntsville, producing around 100,000 units annually after adding a second shift last summer. With room to increase output by another 50,000 vehicles, the plant may eventually produce hybrid versions using Toyota’s technology. While a third shift is technically possible, Mazda executives say it’s unlikely due to challenges in hiring and training the current 4,000-person workforce. The company’s U.S. sales have surged 50% since 2020, hitting record highs last year.
