Huntsville’s Tangled String Studios, known for hand-built guitars and mandolins played by artists from the Black Crowes to local musicians, will close permanently on New Year’s Day 2026.
History and Music Venue
Founded by retired rocket scientist Danny Davis in 2012, Tangled String expanded from a luthier workshop into a live music venue at Lowe Mill. The venue hosted both national acts like Amanda Shires and John Paul White and local performers, including Kelvin Wooten, Microwave Dave, and Ingrid Felts.
Pandemic and Venue Revival
Tangled String paused live performances in 2020 due to the pandemic but continued its luthier operations. Live shows returned in 2023, focusing first on solo instrumentalists and then broadening to Americana and other accessible acts, including the Secret Sisters and Lana White.
Farewell Shows and Legacy
Danny Davis announced a farewell series of approximately 20 final performances, starting October 17 with local duo Common Man and concluding with Shoals indie rockers Billy Allen + The Pollies on December 30-31. Over its nearly 14-year run, Tangled String became a hub for handmade music, intimate performances, and community events, leaving a lasting mark on Huntsville’s arts scene.
