Program to help kids with tough times plans to reach more Alabama schools

A local organization dedicated to helping children through challenging experiences is expanding its program across Alabama. The Handle With Care program connects schools and first responders to support children who witness tra events. The program ensures children receive the help they need by providing a simple but effective communication process.

How to handle with care supports kids

The idea started in West Virginia in 2013 and reached Alabama in 2022 through the National Children’s Advocacy Center. Kelli Mukkadam, the program coordinator, emphasized its importance. “Children in our community face violence and traumatic events, then go to school carrying those experiences,” she explained. “Teachers need tools to support these children without guessing what might be wrong.”

A simple and effective process

The program uses a transparent system to help children in need. When a first responder identifies a child at the scene of a distressing event, they notify the child’s school with a simple message: “Handle With Care.” This message alerts teachers to watch for signs of trauma. As a result, teachers can respond appropriately and connect the child to a counselor or mental health professional if necessary.

Expanding across Alabama

Handle With Care operates in five Alabama school districts, including Huntsville City and Madison County. Over 30 schools received 81 notices this year, helping countless children receive timely support. Mukkadam plans to expand the program to Tuscaloosa and Randolph County. Her ultimate goal is to bring this initiative to every school in Alabama, ensuring children across the state have access to the care they deserve.
