ToggleHundreds Waiting for Help
More than 600 families are on waiting lists for housing in Madison and Limestone counties. Habitat’s executive director, Jeremy Foulks, said the lists have grown so much they’ve had to stop accepting new applicants. The group’s home repair program is also paused due to limited funds.
Rising Costs, Limited Resources
The cost to build a Habitat home has jumped from under $90,000 before the pandemic to about $137,000 today. Rising material prices and a shortage of buildable land are major challenges. Habitat plans to construct 16 homes this year, with 32 homes planned for a community in north Huntsville.
Affordable Homes Change Lives
Habitat homes offer a lifeline for families burdened by high rents. Monthly payments, including taxes and insurance, often range between $600 and $650. Homeowners must meet strict requirements, including income guidelines, sweat equity, and education classes. Despite the obstacles, Habitat continues its mission with support from donors, volunteers, and city partnerships.
