Nonprofits and Utilities step up to support furloughed Huntsville workers

Furloughed federal employees in the Huntsville area are finding support from local utilities and nonprofit organizations during the government shutdown.

Utilities provide relief to customers

Huntsville Utilities has temporarily suspended late fees and service disconnections for customers affected by the shutdown. The company will also work with customers on payment arrangements once normal government operations resume.

“Many of our customers are directly or indirectly affected by this government shutdown, and we want to give them one less thing to worry about during this uncertain time,” said Wes Kelley, president and CEO of Huntsville Utilities. Customers can contact the utility at 256-535-1200 or [email protected] for assistance.

Nonprofits distribute food and resources

Local nonprofits have mobilized to support furloughed workers and their families. One Generation Away has hosted mobile food pantry distributions, including events at Calhoun Community College, providing meals to hundreds of families.

CEO Chris Whitney said the organization is motivated by personal experience, adding, “We’re honored and privileged that we get to serve you. You’ve served us, now it’s our turn to serve you.” Donations help sustain these efforts, and supporters can visit onegenaway.com.

The Food Bank of North Alabama also offers food assistance for federal employees, operating its Market at 2000-B Vernon Ave in Huntsville every Friday and hosting mobile pantry events throughout the region.

No proof of income or residence is required to receive food. Additionally, the Federal Employee Education & Assistance Fund provides Emergency Hardship Loans and Shutdown Grants for eligible federal employees and their families facing financial strain.

How to access assistance

Furloughed workers can check resources through One Generation Away and the Food Bank of North Alabama websites and social media channels.

The community and organizations continue coordinating efforts to ensure families affected by the shutdown can access essential services, food, and financial support.
