Veterans in North Alabama who have long sought more local access to VA healthcare may soon see progress. According to an exclusive report by News 19, a VA Specialty Care Clinic is planned to open in Huntsville in the coming months, providing services beyond primary care closer to home.
Expanding Access for Veterans
Currently, veterans address primary care needs at the Fox Army Health Center or the VA Outpatient Center in Huntsville, but must travel to Birmingham or Nashville for more advanced specialty care. Dr. Oladipo Kukoyi, Birmingham VA Executive Director, told News 19 that the new clinic will be located across from Huntsville Hospital in the UAB building on Governor’s Drive. Services will include cardiology, neurology, and some cancer infusion treatments, helping veterans avoid long commutes.
Meeting Growing Healthcare Demands
Dr. Kukoyi explained that primary care needs are rapidly increasing in Huntsville, straining current facilities. The specialty clinic will not only provide more specialized services locally but also free up capacity at existing primary care clinics. Plans for the future include additional VA clinics for mental health, dental, and women’s specialty care, with initial funding already approved.
Advocating for a Full-Scale VA Hospital
While the specialty clinic will expand care options, U.S. Congressman Dale Strong emphasized the ongoing need for a full-scale VA hospital in Huntsville to serve the area’s growing veteran population. “You look at the large concentration of veterans in our community,” Strong said. “This is a fight we’re willing to fight.”
Veterans and local leaders alike are hopeful that these new facilities will bring more comprehensive and convenient healthcare options to the Tennessee Valley.
