New technology at Huntsville Hospital empowers moms during labor

Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children has introduced wireless monitoring devices in all labor rooms, giving women in labor the freedom to move as needed during childbirth. The hospital recently integrated the GE NOVii+ wireless monitoring system into its 20 labor and delivery rooms, a move celebrated by Nichole Shockley, Labor & Delivery Unit Director. “We are thrilled to bring this technology to every room, enhancing the birthing experience for our patients,” Shockley stated to AL.com.

Improved monitoring and mobility

Previously, the hospital utilized an older version of the wireless monitoring system, which wasn’t available in all rooms. The latest NOVii+ system, also implemented at Madison Hospital, offers improved connectivity—up to 33% better than earlier models—and ensures seamless fetal heart rate, maternal heart rate, and uterine activity monitoring. This advancement allows patients greater mobility, which can be crucial for labor progression.

FDA-Approved for enhanced labor care

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the updated GE Healthcare NOVii+ system earlier this year for 95% of births nationwide. Its belt-free, wireless design provides significant benefits, enabling laboring mothers to move freely and find positions that support their comfort and progress during childbirth.

Advanced features for high-risk patients

Beyond mobility, the NOVii+ system offers enhanced monitoring capabilities for high-risk patients. It delivers real-time, personalized data on maternal and fetal statuses, alerting care teams to changes in heart rate or contraction patterns. These features allow for timely interventions, ensuring both mother and baby safer outcomes.

GE Healthcare emphasized the system’s transformative impact, supporting laboring mothers with freedom of movement and critical monitoring. The NOVii+ system sets a new labor and delivery care standard by combining patient comfort with advanced technology.
