New Skechers store coming soon to Huntsville

A brand-new Skechers store will be opening soon in Huntsville at 975 Airport Rd SW, bringing the popular footwear brand to the Rocket City just in time for the new year.

The Origins of Skechers

Skechers was founded in 1992 by Robert Greenberg, who previously established LA Gear in 1983. The company initially focused on men’s street shoes and utility-style boots, which gained popularity during the grunge fashion era. Its headquarters remain in Manhattan Beach, California.

During the 1990s, Skechers became a household name with products like the unisex “Chrome Dome” boot in 1993. The company expanded internationally by 1997 and launched the Skechers Sport line in 1998, entering the athletic footwear market to compete with major brands like Nike.

Growth, Awards, and Challenges

In the 2000s, Skechers earned recognition for growth and innovation. By 2000, it was named one of Business Week’s “100 Best Small Companies” and “Company of the Year” by Footwear News. The brand expanded into women’s footwear and opened flagship stores in London, Düsseldorf, and Tokyo.

The 2010s brought both achievements and challenges. Forbes called Skechers the “hottest major brand in the U.S.” in 2014, and the company became the fifth-largest sneaker company globally. However, it also faced legal challenges, including a $40 million settlement related to Shape-Ups advertising and a patent lawsuit with Nike.

Recent Developments and Leadership

In the 2020s, Skechers continues to grow, reporting $8.25 billion in annual revenue in 2024. Despite facing international scrutiny in 2021, demand for its products has remained strong.

Skechers is publicly owned, with institutional investors holding the majority stake. Robert Greenberg serves as CEO, and his brother Michael Greenberg, co-founder and president, has overseen global expansion and philanthropic initiatives, including the Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk, which has raised over $24 million for children with special needs and education programs.

From its early grunge-style boots to a global $8 billion brand, Skechers has demonstrated adaptability and innovation. The upcoming Huntsville location continues this legacy, offering residents both style and comfort in footwear.
