Huntsville’s live music scene continues to grow as The Venue Group (tvg), the company behind the Orion Amphitheater, has announced plans to build a new concert venue with a capacity between 2,500 and 3,000. The move aims to fill a critical gap in the city’s venue offerings.
The Orion, with its 8,000-person capacity, and the Von Braun Center’s Mars Music Hall, which seats about 1,600, bookend the city’s current mid-sized options. The proposed tvg venue would create a middle tier between these locations and others, such as Propst Arena and Mark C. Smith Concert Hall.
According to city officials, tvg is currently reviewing possible locations for the new space. The company has described the project as a natural extension of its ongoing collaboration with Huntsville, which began with the launch of Orion in 2022.
Momentum Built by Orion’s Success
Since its debut, Orion Amphitheater has hosted more than 600,000 attendees and generated over $45 million in revenue. Local leaders credit the venue with contributing an estimated $131 million in total economic activity, including tourism-related spending on hotels, dining, and retail.
Nearly half of Orion’s ticket sales have come from visitors outside the region, a testament to its draw beyond North Alabama. The amphitheater has played a key role in elevating Huntsville’s cultural profile and attracting major acts that had never performed in the city before.
Now in its fourth year, Orion has already celebrated its 100th performance and continues to anchor the city’s emerging status as a music destination.
Building on a Broader Vision
The new mid-sized venue would mark tvg’s third project in Huntsville. Earlier this year, the company completed the first phase of renovations to a well-known downtown site, aiming to preserve its character while updating its functionality.
Tvg leadership has emphasized that the new venue aligns with Huntsville’s growing investment in creative infrastructure. City officials echo that sentiment, noting the project’s potential to boost opportunities for local and touring artists alike.
As plans move forward, the project reflects a broader vision: to position Huntsville not only as a hub for innovation and science but also as a rising force in arts and entertainment across the Southeast.
