New interchange to improve access and traffic flow for Redstone Arsenal

The upcoming Resolute Way interchange at I-565 will improve access to Redstone Arsenal and ease traffic flow. Jake Roth, chief of master planning with the Garrison’s Directorate of Public Works, explained that the project will create a four-lane divided roadway connecting to I-565 west of the Arsenal. This new route will reduce congestion and resolve safety concerns at the existing Research Park interchange.

Construction timeline and collaboration

According to the Redstone Rocket, construction is scheduled to begin in 2026. Roth emphasized that while the team has made progress, significant tasks remain. The City of Huntsville, the Alabama Department of Transportation, and the Federal Highway Administration are actively collaborating on the project. Together, they have identified a route that meets all requirements and developed conceptual plans to ensure smooth execution.

Benefits for Arsenal and surrounding areas

The new interchange will provide Arsenal employees and Redstone Gateway personnel with another option for accessing the installation. Consequently, traffic at the busy Research Park exit will be eased. Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle included this project in his State of the City address as one of seven key road initiatives. These efforts, which are part of the $800 million Restore Our Roads initiative, aim to improve transportation across the city significantly.

Land use and future planning

The project will require 38 acres of Army property and may involve acquiring an additional 6.3 acres. Roth stated that the team is finalizing an easement for the city, allowing construction to proceed efficiently. By working closely with federal and local agencies, the project team aims to ensure the new roadway meets all safety and operational standards while addressing long-term transportation needs.
