New Huntsville facility opens for Northrop Grumman’s projects

Northrop Grumman has expanded its footprint in the Huntsville area, significantly increasing its capacity to develop advanced air defense technologies for the U.S. military and international partners.

New EPIC facility brings major growth

The company officially opened its $20 million Enhanced Production and Integration Center (EPIC) on One Aviation Way, near Huntsville International Airport. Covering 175,500 square feet—about four acres under roof—the site includes production, manufacturing, office space, and secure testing areas.

Huntsville to lead in IBCS production

At EPIC, a portion of Northrop Grumman’s 3,000 local employees will focus on assembling and delivering the Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS)—a next-gen command solution designed to unify multiple air and missile defense systems. This new facility nearly doubles the company’s local manufacturing space, according to leadership. Company executive Ben Davies emphasized that the expansion underscores Northrop’s commitment to both national defense and the Huntsville community.

IBCS poised to shape the future of defense

The Army has selected IBCS to replace legacy systems like Patriot, THAAD, and FAAD, with full production approval granted in 2023. All elements, including key components like the Engagement Operations Center and IFCN Relay, will be produced and integrated at the new facility. Local officials and Army leaders applauded the opening, with Mayor Tommy Battle and Col. Chris Hill praising its significance for national defense and for the Alabama workforce. As defense priorities evolve, IBCS is already being deployed abroad and is expected to play a key role in future initiatives such as the “Golden Dome” missile defense project.

Northrop Grumman officials highlighted the modular nature of IBCS, which allows for cross-branch integration and simplifies soldier training. Project leads noted that operations at EPIC will now take over full-rate production, with expanded infrastructure like dual cranes and modular power systems improving efficiency.
