New Alabama law turns up the volume on music industry incentives

A landmark update to Alabama’s Entertainment Industry Incentive Act is set to give the state’s music sector a major boost, following the ceremonial signing of Senate Bill 177 on Thursday, July 31, in Montgomery.

Music Production Now Eligible

The new legislation officially adds music album production as a qualified activity under the state’s entertainment rebate program. Huntsville Music Officer Matt Mandrella joined Governor Kay Ivey, Alabama Film Officer Meghann Bridgeman, and legislative leaders to mark the occasion.

Set to take effect October 1, 2025, the law introduces several key changes:

Music albums qualify for state production incentives.

The Alabama Film Office has been renamed the Alabama Entertainment Office to reflect expanded industry support.

The annual incentive cap rises to $22 million, with $2 million specifically reserved for music projects.

State and Local Leaders Applaud

Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle praised the update as a breakthrough for Alabama’s creative economy.

“This legislation sends a strong message that Alabama is serious about supporting the music industry,” Battle said. “From studios to songwriters, we’ve created an environment where talent can thrive.”

He also credited Mandrella’s leadership in shaping the bill’s success.

A Win for Music Creators

Mandrella emphasized that this move puts Alabama’s musicians and producers on stronger footing.

“Music creators in Alabama now have access to the same types of production incentives that have long benefitted the film and television industries,” he said. “It’s a giant step forward in empowering our state’s artists, producers, and record labels.”

The updated law is expected to attract new investment in Alabama’s music infrastructure and help retain talent by creating more opportunities for local production.
