Huntsville’s $7.7M West Huntsville Rec Center nears opening

Huntsville’s new $7.7 million West Huntsville Recreation Center is almost ready to open, according to online reports. City officials expect the facility to welcome visitors within the next few weeks.

Final Steps Before Opening

City Council members approved a final change order for the project, which moved the center closer to completion. General Services Director Ricky Wilkinson said construction crews have finished installing equipment, painting lines, and sealing the gym floor.

He explained that the floor needs five days to cure. After that, inspectors will complete a final walkthrough. If everything checks out, crews will move in furniture and Parks & Recreation staff the following week. Wilkinson said the center will be “ready to rock and roll” once that step is done.

A Modern Facility for a Growing District

The one-story, 27,350-square-foot building sits at 150 Martin Road, just west of Zierdt Road. Its design mirrors the busy Mark Russell Recreation Center on Taylor Road.

The new center features two basketball courts, two volleyball courts, and three indoor pickleball courts. It also includes four outdoor pickleball courts. Construction took about a year.

District 5 Councilman John Meredith called the project “a good news story.” He noted that the center fills a major need in his fast-growing district.

Strengthening Huntsville’s Parks Network

With this addition, Huntsville will have 15 recreation and community centers citywide. These facilities complement more than 65 public parks, including the newly opened Park at Hays Farm in south Huntsville. Officials say the recreation center will support the city’s efforts to expand access to sports, fitness, and community programming.
